Brazil’s Presidential elections are more than four months away, an eternity in the age of televised campaigning, especially in a country where personalities outweigh the issues. Yet for months, the underdog has led the polls, slowly climbing to a huge lead over all other candidates. Early in the 2002 race, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, known simply as “Lula”, was discounted as a candidate who was born to lose, having failed on three previous attempts to become President. But after six months of rising popularity, Lula has caught the attention of investors, who are now speculating about what his presidency would mean for Brazil’s business environment.
