Does anyone recognize Mexico’s economy these days? Inflation is below 5%, the peso is the world’s strongest currency, and investors consider the Aztec nation the darling of all emerging markets. The most profound change is the de-linking of the economy from the political cycle. Economists see Mexico evolving naturally into a global player, but most Mexicans still wonder out loud when the next devaluation or other economic disaster will strike. That’s natural enough, considering the historical volatility they have lived through, and some real risks do remain. But Mexico has a new economy now and both business and consumers need to adjust to the new reality.
