When global executives look abroad for growth opportunities, they often consider Brazil. With a population of 180 million, it is the 6th world’s largest market, and the 10th largest in terms of consumer spending based on purchasing power parity. Benchmarking exercises generally try to compare Brazil with other emerging markets in terms of GDP, exchange rates, and inflation among other factors. But understanding consumer behavior requires a deeper understanding of the role of credit in a high-interest rate market and the ways that consumers attempt to leverage their meager savings to increase buying power.
