For those who doubted Latin America's political shift to the left, bloody riots in Buenos Aires this past month delivered a stunning wake-up call. The Argentine debacle provides further evidence that Latin America's 12-year experiment with neo-liberal economic reforms is at best a mixed success and at worst a dismal failure. With another year of economic stagnation forecast for 2002, new waves of popular dissent are certain to follow. As a result, business will likely face a more regulated and restricted environment in future. The viability of the FTAA and other free trade initiatives appears increasingly threatened.
