The Mexican Cellular Market: Challenging Times Ahead - October 2001

Mexican cellular operators are bracing themselves for a difficult year ahead after five years of heady growth and two years of record profits. Too many negative factors are converging on the country's cellular market for the industry to avoid losses and even consolidation of operators over the next two years.

Mexico's cellular industry is highly exposed to currency fluctuations. Most expansion investment is focused on imported equipment and know-how bought with dollars. Depreciation of dollar-based assets will continue to undermine balance sheets for several years. Meanwhile, revenue is received in pesos, and any devaluation yields immediate losses. The mighty peso has stood as the world's strongest currency for nearly two years.
