The essential role of the Internet in driving Latin American telecom growth is nothing new. Predictions of incredible growth are heavily based on access to the Internet over wireless systems, chiefly cellular phones. Top executives are betting that in five years the ability to access the Internet without the need of a computer or cable will make wireless phones more common than fixed lines.

The region is expected to have more than 190 million wireless users by 2004. Cellular phones with Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) capability are expected to represent 70 percent of sales and 60 percent of billings by 2005. Proponents of m-commerce are enthusiastic, with analysts predicting more than $5.5 billion in sales by 2004.
