Internet market delirium hit Latin America in the 3rd quarter of 1999 with a number of high profile IPOs and strategic announcements. With 4.8 million users (est. December, 1999) divided amongst seven major markets, Latin America represents only 4% of the global ISP market. However, Brazil alone is home to 54% of the region’s internet accounts (2.6 million users), large enough to attract global interest. Twenty-four months from now, 5 million Brazilians will be connected, spending close to US$200 million on-line.
