Retail foreign exchange is a dying business in Europe and the US. Today, people tend to use credit or debit cards to obtain local currency when traveling for business or pleasure. As a result, the use of traveler's checks and moneychangers such as Bureaux de change and Casas de Cambio has fallen steadily. Some analysts are predicting that retail moneychangers will disappear entirely within the next 15 years. This is a welcome change for travelers who are fed up with onerous commissions and currency spreads, but it spells trouble for foreign exchange giants like AMEX and Thomas Cook, as well as their smaller competitors.
