Family remittances to Latin America continue to capture headlines as they move beyond the $45 billion mark annually. They remain one of region’s largest revenue streams. Until recently, most of the attention was focused on the US and European channels and little information was available concerning intraregional remittances, or those from Japan. Recent estimates from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) reveal that Japan is the second-biggest source of remittances to the region, with Latin American expatriates sending home around $2.65 billion per year to their families at home. These so-called dekasseguis — largely from Brazil and Peru — have integrated into their new society more rapidly and more thoroughly than their counterparts in the US, creating interesting opportunities for financial services providers.

e-Waste -
A growing business in
South America

by Cecilia Canseco

Brazil is South America’s leader in corporate environmental awareness, and not surprisingly it is among the first to pay serious attention to e-waste. With the country accounting for more than 88% of electronic goods sold on the continent, refuse in the form of computers, peripherals, cell phones and other types of e-waste is becoming a pressing issue. Legislators are considering public intervention, but serious questions remain: Which products present the greatest environmental risks? How can government intervene to protect the public interest? How will tighter regulation affect local producers? How fast can new regulations be implemented? The answers are important to the region’s manufacturers as they try to stay ahead legislative change by launching their own e-waste management programs.
