Why the US Hispanic foodservice market tastes so good

By: Oscar Gonzalez, InfoAmericas’ Food Industry Director and
Bob Wilkus, President, World-Link Group

The world’s largest Latino food market is north, not south, of the Rio Grande. To begin with, the US Hispanic market is the fastest growing population base in all of the Americas, fuelled by record immigration growth over the last 15 years. As US Hispanics move into the middle and upper classes of US society, they dine out more frequently, creating new demands for Hispanic restaurants and flavors.

This year, the 32 million Hispanic consumers in the US will spend more than their 100 million counterparts in Mexico and even 170 million Latinos in Brazil. For food consumed away from home, US Hispanics will spend $26.5 billion in 2002, 40% more than Mexicans or Brazilians. Moreover, Hispanic food is not for Latinos alone. Americans of all stripes have taken to Latin food and beverages, just has they have embraced Latin music. Over the last decade, Mexican foods like tacos, quesadillas, salsa, and frijoles have crept into the diverse American palate, along with beverages like tequila. These trends are creating outstanding opportunities in US markets for Latin American suppliers of food and beverage products.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK

Can Paraguay move forward from its corrupt past?

By George Arfield

A nasty political battle is going on in the heart of South America, eclipsed in the media by the high-stakes politics of more visible players like Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela. Citizens of Paraguay go to the polls on April 27, 2003 to choose among candidates for every elected position in the country, from president to local council members. The election is crucial to the social and economic viability of this potentially rich — but troubled — country. Voters must decide between business as usual and a new reformist movement. Pedro Fadul, a 48-year-old businessman, is offering to excise the pervasive corruption that has sunk the country into stagnancy and sent it to the bottom of Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index. The elections offer a glimpse of hope that Paraguay could evolve from its backward ways by electing a more transparent and modern leader. But as Fox in Mexico, Cardoso in Brazil and Flores in El Salvador have all proven, a change of leaders does not automatically change a nation.
